Jennifer Doudna

“Is it more ethical to edit embryos or screen a lot of embryos and throw many away?”

This question reflects one of the ethical dilemmas sparked by Jennifer Doudna’s discovery of CRISPR-Cas9 in 2012.

A tool that allows scientists to edit DNA with precision and efficiency.

By cutting and replacing DNA at specific points, CRISPR has paved the way for new treatments for genetic diseases and more sustainable crops.

But Jennifer didn’t stop at discovery.

She became an entrepreneur to turn CRISPR’s potential into real-world applications.

She co-founded several companies, including Caribou Biosciences, Mammoth Biosciences, and Intellia Therapeutics.

These startups focus on genetic therapies, disease diagnostics, and improving agriculture.

Together, they represent billions of dollars in value.

But stepping into the business world wasn’t an easy transition.

Jennifer had to learn how to pitch complex scientific ideas to investors, build teams that shared her vision, and lead companies in a competitive biotech industry.

She also became a key figure in discussions about the ethical use of CRISPR. She has advocated for global guidelines to ensure the technology is used responsibly.

Her commitment to science and innovation doesn’t stop there.

In 2021, Jennifer partnered with Tory Burch to create a fellowship for women entrepreneurs in genomics.

The program provides funding, mentorship, and resources to help women bridge the gap between science and business.
