Daniela Amodei
She helped build GPT-3. Then left OpenAI to build something safer.
Daniela Amodei is the cofounder and president of Anthropic, the $61.5B AI safety research lab behind Claude.
The only model family trained with a “constitution.”
While others race to build bigger, faster models, Daniela’s question is simpler: Is this safe for humanity?
Daniela started in politics, then joined Stripe in 2013 as one of its earliest hires.
Over five years, she scaled the company from 45 to 300 people, built its technical recruiting org, led risk and compliance teams, and launched policies on everything from violent extremism to pseudo-pharma.
Her work helped slash fraud loss rates by 72%, to the lowest in Stripe’s history.
Then came OpenAI.
First as VP of People.
Then as Engineering Manager.
Then as VP of Safety and Policy.
She oversaw the company’s technical safety teams and business operations, guiding OpenAI through the early days of GPT while ensuring ethics weren’t an afterthought.
But when commercial pressure began to eclipse long-term safety, she and six others (her brother Dario among them) walked away.
Anthropic was born.
Since 2020, she’s led teams building interpretable, steerable, and scalable AI systems that businesses can trust.
She’s forging partnerships with Amazon and Google and has raised over $8B.
And she’s doing it all while staying grounded.
Mother. Musician. Literature grad. One of Time’s 100 Most Influential People in AI.
In her words: “We want to help make AI systems safer from day one.”
