Debbi Fields

A man once dropped a dictionary in Debbi Fields’ lap and told her, “If you can’t speak proper English, don’t speak at all.”

Not only did she not shut up, but she responded by building a $450M cookie empire.

Debbi Fields was 13 when she got her first job.

A ball girl for the Oakland A’s, earning $5/hour.

She spent every dollar buying butter, chocolate, and vanilla.

Why? Because she’d grown up baking with lard and carob.

That’s all her family could afford.

At 19, she married a Stanford-educated financial consultant, Randall Fields.

Then came a dinner party… and a moment she never forgot.

A wealthy client of her husband corrected her grammar in front of the table.

Then dropped a dictionary in her lap and told her not to speak if she “couldn’t speak proper English.”

Debbi left in tears.

But it made her want to do something big.

So she did what she always loved: bake.

In 1977, at 20 years old, Debbi Fields walked into banks, cookies in hand, pitching a completely unproven business: a store that sold only cookies.

She got rejected. A lot.

But finally, someone said yes.

She opened the first “Mrs. Fields Chocolate Chippery” in Palo Alto.

Her husband bet she wouldn’t make $50 the first day.

He was almost right.

No one came.

So Debbi went outside and handed out free samples.

She made $75.

She changed the name to Mrs. Fields Cookies and built fast.

14 stores by 1981.

400+ within a decade.

At its peak: 650 stores in the U.S. and 80 more in 11 countries.

In her opinion? “Good enough never is.”

She only used premium ingredients.

Baked everything fresh.

She even embraced early retail tech, implementing computer systems so advanced they were profiled by Harvard Business School.

In 1990, she licensed the brand to Marriott.

In 1992, she sold Mrs. Fields to Famous Brands for $100M, and stayed on as spokesperson through 2000.

But she never stopped creating.

She hosted TV shows like Great American Desserts and Desserts with Debbi Fields.

She published multiple cookbooks, including “One Smart Cookie” and “I Love Chocolate.”

And she launched the Mrs. Fields Children’s Health Foundation, funding research into cystic fibrosis.

Today, Mrs. Fields Cookies is sold in 300+ stores worldwide.
