Vandana Luthra

This woman launched India’s first wellness clinic with $240 and sold it for $300M.

In 1989, Vandana Luthra launched VLCC.

At the time, “wellness” in India meant either a beauty parlour or an ayurvedic retreat.

There was no clinical weight management industry.

No integration of dermatology, diet, and fitness under one roof.
Vandana changed that.

She studied nutrition and cosmetology in Germany, came back to India, and opened her first centre in Delhi’s Safdarjung Enclave.

She combined medical supervision, structured diet plans, exercise regimens, and advanced skin treatments.

Everyone told her it wouldn’t work.

Doctors didn’t want to partner with a woman-led startup.

Investors didn’t believe there was a market.

Even family and friends questioned why she was starting a business with two young daughters at home.

The first centre was profitable in a month.

In 2009, Vandana raised ₹14.4 crore from Shine for a ₹125 crore valuation.

In 2023, she was managing 311 centres and 100 institutes in 13 countries.

And that year, VLCC was acquired by the Carlyle Group in a ₹2,500 crore deal (~$300M).
