Doris Fisher
In 1969, Doris and her husband Don had a simple problem: Don couldn’t find jeans that fit.
Their solution?
Open a store that made shopping for denim easy.
With $63,000 in savings, they launched the first Gap in San Francisco, selling Levi’s and records.
They had no idea they were about to build a global empire.
Doris wasn’t just a co-founder.
She was the heart of Gap.
She served as the company’s merchandiser for over 30 years, ensuring that every trend, every style, and every product resonated with customers.
She helped grow Gap from a single storefront into a $16B powerhouse with over 3,500 stores worldwide, pioneering American casual wear as we know it.
But her impact stretched far beyond retail.
Doris was a trailblazer in workplace equality, ensuring Gap became the first Fortune 500 company to guarantee equal pay for men and women.
She also co-founded the KIPP Foundation, donating $15M to expand public charter schools across the U.S., giving thousands of students access to quality education.
Her love for art was just as influential.
Over decades, she and Don built one of the world’s most renowned modern art collections.
Featuring works by Andy Warhol, Ellsworth Kelly, and Richard Serra.
Instead of keeping it private, Doris ensured their collection would be enjoyed by all, loaning it to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, making it one of the largest modern art museums in the U.S.
