Diane von Fürstenberg

She wrapped success around women. Literally.

When Diane von Fürstenberg introduced the wrap dress in 1974, she was redefining how women dressed, moved, and felt about themselves.

In less than two years, over a million wrap dresses flew off the shelves, turning DVF into a global phenomenon.

The dress became a power symbol for a generation of ambitious, independent women.

And today, it holds a permanent place in the Smithsonian Museum.

Born in Belgium to a Holocaust survivor mother, she learned early on that resilience was everything.

After studying economics in Geneva, she worked in Paris and Italy, apprenticing under textile manufacturers before moving to New York in 1969.

There, she found herself at the center of a creative revolution… designing dresses by day and frequenting Studio 54 by night.

A friendship with Vogue editor Diana Vreeland helped catapult her designs into the spotlight, leading to her first major showcase at the Gotham Hotel.

By the late ’70s, Diane had built a fashion empire, expanding into cosmetics, fragrances, and home decor.

But with rapid success came challenges.

By 1983, she sold her company’s licenses and stepped away from fashion.

That could have been the end of the DVF legacy.

Instead, she made a comeback.

In 1997, after years of publishing and creative ventures, Diane bought back her brand and reignited interest in the wrap dress.

Once again, she found herself shaping fashion history… this time, for a new generation.

Beyond her business, Diane has dedicated her life to empowering women.

She served as President of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) for over a decade, spearheading initiatives like the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund and the Design Piracy Prohibition Act.

Her philanthropic work through the Diller-von Fürstenberg Family Foundation has supported countless causes, and her role on the board of Vital Voices has helped elevate women leaders worldwide.

She’s received some of the highest honors in the industry, from the CFDA’s Lifetime Achievement Award to a Gold Medal at the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute Gala.

In 2024, her life was chronicled in the Disney+ documentary "Diane von Fürstenberg: Woman in Charge".
